Music and Me

You could say music is my life: it always has been very important to me and it's a very big part of who I am. It all started when I was a little girl and went to the attic to go through the records of my parents - mostly The Beatles, Bob Dylan and several Dutch singers. I loved the feel and sound of those vinyl recors, and I still do.

Then when I was 10/11 years old, my love for classical music began. That schoolyear we started out every thursday morning with a classical piece. It was the greatest time of school for me and I looked forward to it all week long. When the teacher put on the music, I quickly wrote down the composer and title and layed my head in my arms on the desk and closed my eyes - I was in my own little world - in solitude with only the music. When the day was over I would rush home, unfold the little piece of paper I wrote the information on and went through the classical cd's of my mum. When I found the song I would make my did listen to it, then the same thing happened when my mum came home from work. The knew the songs already but I was so excited and wanted everyone to hear the beauty that is classical music.

My years as a teenager were very poppy and were filled with the Backstreet Boys and a lot of other top 40 popsongs. You can say whatever you want about the BSB, but Brian sure can sing! I don't listen to pop all that much anymore, but I'll probably love the BSB forever.

I slowly came out of the pop-phase and learned a lot about other music and styles. My new big loves were Jazz, Indie and The Blues.

I finished highschool, moved abroad, learned about Slovak music and came back home after a year. Now what? What I wanted to study after highschool changed about a million times in the years before that and now I had to make a decision. In the end there was no other way to go: I applied to study music <3. The school I applied at only took in 45 students a year so I was nervous and sure I wasn't going to get in. So I made plans to go to Ireland for a year to do volunteer work in Ireland, as part of a European Union program. So whatever happened, I had something planned. I didn't hear back from the school for a long time and then came the day I had to make a decision about Ireland. If I said yes, I would have to go. A few hours before they would call me, I got a call from the school. I got in!!! I choose to go to music college - I would have loved to do the program in Ireland but the change of getting into that college was so small as so many people applied, so how could I decline that?

During my college years I learned a lot about music, and had the best time ever. I did a few internships - 01: Theater in Antwerp, Belgium. 02: Small/Medium Concert hall/venue in Holland. 03: Local Music Organisation in Holland. I loved working as a stagemanager, but wasn't sure if that was what I want to do for the rest of my life. It was an amazing experience thoough =).

Only a few months ago I finally figured out what I want to do jobwise: Programmer. Not of computers but the programmer of a smaller to medium sized venue. I hope that one day this dream will truly happen.

As you can see music means a lot to me, and there's nothing I love more than discovering new music and musicians.
